Natural sweetener ! Replace sugar & sugar substitutes! Zero Calories!
Stevia rebaudiana has been used for centuries by the Guaraní people of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, who called it ka’a he’ê (“sweet herb”), to sweeten the yerba mate tea, as medicine, and as a “sweet treat”.
In 1899, botanist Moisés Santiago Bertoni first described the plant as growing in eastern Paraguay, and observed its sweet taste.
Is It Safe to Use Stevia instead of Sugar or Artificial Sweeteners?
Authorities in countries such as Japan, China and different countries in Latin America accepted the use of Stevia extracts as a natural sweetener.
In Japan, Stevia sweeteners were commercially available since 1971 and no studies of health problems related to this sweetener have been published so far.
Until a few years ago in the US, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of Stevia extracts only as an ingredient in a “food supplement”, but not as a tabletop sweetener. Only the glycoside Rebaudioside A in its pure form is considered as a Substance Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS for its acronym in English) since December 2008. In contrast, stevioside, the other main compound Stevia extract, had not been Recognized as GRAS by the FDA.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which monitors sweeteners and their use, published a document with an evaluation of the toxicological information available to date. The result is that Stevia and Stevia extracts are considered safe in its use as a tabletop sweetener.
