Cleaning your Yerba Mate Bombilla
Regular yerba mate drinkers should clean in-depth the bombilla every 30 – 40 days or so in order to make sure that all the sediment that sticks inside is released. It also removes the ugly taste from the accumulated dirt. It is always a good idea to take the bombilla out from the gourd and rinse as you as you finish drinking your yerba mate.
Steps to clean your bombilla:
1- Place water in a container (it can be a saucepan or pot)
2- Add a dessert spoon of baking soda per bombilla (all cold)
3- Bring to the fire and leave it for about half an hour. (You will notice that the water changes to a dark color).
4- Rinse with cold water.
This method can be applied to bombillas made of metallic materials (alpaca, stainless steel, sterling silver, etc).
In case there is some residue left inside, you can use a bombilla brush cleaner. We highly recommend this additional cleaning tool. Especially for bamboo bombillas.
We also recommend the use of an additional mesh filter to keep your bombillas in good shape. It also improves the taste.
